Three hundred hospitality and catering students from City College Norwich, College of West Anglia and Great Yarmouth College worked with the UK's leading premium party food manufacturer Frank Dale Foods to prepare and serve food for Her Majesty and 4,000 guests at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Garden Party at Sandringham on Tuesday 12th June.

Meticulous preparation and a lot of hard work was put in by students and staff from the colleges to ensure that the menu of afternoon tea, sandwiches, pastries and sweets – complete with red, white and blue macaroons – was up to the exacting standards required for the prestigious royal occasion.

A group of professional cookery students from City College Norwich visited Frank Dale Foods in Bunwell, the UK’s leading premium party food manufacturer, to help prepare 4,500 Victoria sponge cakes for the royal garden party.

On the day of the garden party itself, the students pulled out all the stops to provide the best possible food presentation and service to guests in marquees in the gardens of the Queen’s Norfolk home.

Two students from each college, including Emma Seaman, 17, and Sam Masters, 22, from City College Norwich, had the honour of serving the Queen and Prince Andrew in the VIP marquee.

Hospitality diploma student Emma Seaman said:

“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity – for a 17 year old to be trusted like that was amazing. Afterwards I was introduced to the Queen and she was saying how good the event was and how the students from the three colleges were working well together.”

Frank Dale Foods MD, Robert Dale added:

“I am so proud of the 16 creative city college students. I’m honoured and delighted, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the aspiring young chefs who hand-made the sponges in our canapĂ© factory; they were light & buttery generously filled with Scottish raspberries and fresh double cream. Get ready for talented stars of the future!”
